Family Therapy

Family therapy is a form of talk therapy that focuses on the improvement of relationships among family members. It can also help treat specific mental health or behavioral conditions, such as substance use disorder or oppositional defiant disorder.

In a lot of families and individuals I work with they often state that feeling of no-one is listening, and/ or loss of hope is strong. I know it can feel like that there is no way forward; I have many years of experience, of facilitating families and individuals into moving into a positive place and addressing needs.

15 years ago I specialized in family therapy practicing as a Multi-systemic Therapist (MST) for MST UK. As a MST therapist I worked with families and children with severe and complex needs, from behavioural issues to Special Education Needs & Disability (SEND); and the systems around that individual including their families, schools, peers, professionals and communities.

The aim of my systemic therapy is to identify all your individual needs; and develop, implement and establish a workable plan, whilst identifying and overcoming any barriers to success.

Working systemically means to look at all an individual, child's and/or young person's needs from the perspective of their academic ability in education, through to their social, cognitive and communication needs and development.

I take a positive and strength-based approach, which ensures that I capture what is already working well, or what has previously worked, and the key skills and strengths a child and/or young person has; as well as the systems that operate around that individual. It is important to take this approach as this fundamentally forms part of the foundations of any plans, interventions and strategies moving forward.

In order to regulate my role for quality assurance I follow the SEND Code of Practice 2015 and the BACP ethical guidelines at all times. In addition to this I have a Diploma in Care which underpins my knowledge in child development.

The Journey

If you would like to explore the idea of therapy, or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

If you would like to go ahead, the process is as follows:

  • A 15-20 minute free of charge initial telephone conversation

  • If you decide to take the next step we will book an assessment appointment, charged at a reduced rate. This initial assessment appointment is usually done with the parents/guardians of the household, and can either be completed in your family home or at my therapy room. (Details below).

  • If you would like to proceed then I would conduct a full assessment, which entails meeting the rest of the family members within the household and arranging one to one sessions with them to gather their perspectives.

  • Following this assessment we can discuss what you would like to do next, this could entail:

    • Weekly session within the family home (agreed number in advance)

    • Observations of children within school, if you feels their needs are not being met and may be a contributing factor to their behaviour

    • Meeting wider family members for wider assessment

  • All session are face to face.
